Spotlight on complex systems: Modelling complexity in industrial decarbonisation

Our Complex Systems Toolkit teaching resource (classroom activity) “Modelling complexity in industrial decarbonisation” explores heat integration for the decarbonisation of industrial processes through the lens of complex systems thinking, combining simulation, systems-level modelling, and reflective scenario analysis.

Its aim is to equip learners with the ability to model, analyse, and optimise pathways for industrial decarbonisation through a complex-systems lens – integrating technical, economic, and policy dimensions – while linking factory-level design decisions to wider value-chain dynamics, multi-stakeholder trade-offs, and long-term sustainability impacts.

We’ve provided this and other practical Teaching resourcesKnowledge articles and Guidance articles for you to use and adapt, and to make it simple for you to embed complex systems concepts into your teaching.
