Spotlight on complex systems: Island energy transition

Our Complex Systems Toolkit teaching resource case study “Island energy transition” explores complex systems modelling in renewable energy transition. It guides learners through the complex systems challenges of Prince Edward Island, Canada’s ambitious 100% renewable energy transition by 2030. Learners will experience how technical, social, and economic factors interact through emergence, feedback loops, and multi-scale dynamics that traditional engineering analysis alone cannot capture. It addresses both AHEP mapping and INCOSE competencies.

Onyekachi Nwafor, author of the case study, had this to say about the toolkit, and about the importance of embedding complex systems into teaching: “Proud to have contributed to the Complex Systems Toolkit and to be part of this amazing community of experts. This project represents a significant step forward in supporting educators, engineers, and learners with practical, accessible systems-thinking resources.”

We’ve provided this and other practical Teaching resourcesKnowledge articles and Guidance articles for you to use and adapt, and to make it simple for you to embed complex systems concepts into your teaching.
