Royal Academy of Engineering: Innovation in Autonomous Systems

This latest in the Academy’s Innovation in… series of events will showcase a selection of some of the most recent advances in autonomous systems. It will focus on the potential of autonomous systems to have a transformative impact on industry and business, as well as considering the evolving relationship between people and technology.

Autonomy is at the core of modern complex systems as, increasingly, these systems are required top decide for themselves what to do and when to do it. Autonomy now extends beyond traditional robotic areas, covering autonomous vehicles, sensor networks and machine learning. With increasing growth opportunities available, the UK’s Robotics and Autonomous System (RAS) Special Interest Group suggested that the UK has potential to achieve a 10% share of a world market estimated to be worth £70bn by 2020. Beyond this, the global economic value of RAS in broader sectors is estimated at between $1.9 and $6.4 trillion a year by 2025.
