Complex Systems Toolkit: Assessing systems thinking through student-created AI simulations (CPD-eligible webinar)
Online event freeDescription:
As part of the Complex Systems Toolkit, supported by Quanser, we will be exploring assessing systems thinking through student-created AI simulations.
This free to attend workshop will be delivered by Dr. Stuart Grey, and will demonstrate a new assessment approach, developed from his teaching at the University of Glasgow and shared through the EPC’s Complex Systems Toolkit.
Students create and debug interactive AI simulations of complex sociotechnical scenarios, making their understanding of stakeholders, relationships, feedback and trade-offs visible through their design decisions and documented revisions.
Participants will try the activity themselves, examine what students’ work can reveal about their understanding, and explore how to set, support and mark this type of assessment in their own disciplines.
You can find a teaching activity from Dr. Grey – “LLM-driven interactive simulation for complex sociotechnical systems” – in the Complex Systems Toolkit.
Continuing Professional Development:
Attendees will gain:
-
An understanding of how student-created AI simulations can be used to assess systems thinking in complex sociotechnical problems.
-
Practical experience of testing and refining an interactive scenario to explore stakeholders, feedback and competing priorities.
-
Insight into how students’ design decisions, debugging and documented revisions reveal their understanding and critical judgement.
-
Strategies for helping students identify and challenge assumptions, bias and limitations in AI-generated simulations.
-
Practical guidance on adapting the EPC Complex Systems Toolkit activity for their own disciplines, including setting the assessment, supporting students and marking their work.
Attendees will be eligible to receive an Engineering Professors’ Council attendance certificate for 1 CPD hour. Please tick the box to request this when you register.
Please note: full attendance of the live event is mandatory in order to gain a CPD certificate. We are able to view when participants log on and log off.
Registration:
Registration will close at 11.59pm on 11th November. If you have missed this registration window, please contact Wendy Attwell.
