Celebrating student innovation: the Hammermen David K. Harrison Student Award at EAN Congress 2026

The Hammermen David K. Harrison Student Award will once again be a highlight of the Engineering Academics Network Annual Congress, showcasing the creativity, ambition and technical talent of emerging engineers.

Taking place as part of EAN Congress 2026 at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, the award provides a national platform for engineering students to present their work to academics, industry representatives, policy voices and members of the wider engineering education community.

Supported by The Incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow, the award celebrates student projects that demonstrate innovation, real-world relevance and the potential to make a meaningful contribution to society.

A platform for emerging engineers

For students, presenting at Congress is a valuable opportunity to share their work beyond their own institution. It gives finalists the chance to discuss their ideas with experienced educators and professionals, receive feedback, build confidence and develop their networks.

The poster showcase is designed to create space for conversation. Delegates can learn about each project directly from the students, ask questions and explore the thinking behind their work.

This kind of engagement is especially important for early-career engineers. A thoughtful question, a professional connection or a piece of encouragement can help students see the wider value of their work and consider where it might lead next.

Student work with real-world purpose

The 2026 finalists reflect the breadth of engineering and its relevance to some of the most pressing challenges facing society.

Their projects explore areas including aviation maintenance, healthcare education, medical therapy development, sustainable construction materials and climate intervention technologies. Together, they demonstrate how students are applying engineering knowledge to practical, social, environmental and industrial challenges.

The award is a reminder that innovation is not limited to established researchers, companies or senior professionals. Some of the most original ideas begin with students who are willing to question existing approaches and test new possibilities.

Part of the Congress experience

The Hammermen David K. Harrison Student Award forms an important part of the wider Congress programme.

EAN Congress 2026 will explore the theme AI: Evolution or Revolution?, considering how engineering education should respond to rapid technological and societal change. The student award complements this theme by highlighting the people who will shape the next stage of engineering practice.

The finalists’ work shows engineering education in action: students identifying problems, applying technical knowledge, developing solutions and communicating their ideas to a wider audience.

Supported by the Incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow

The award is supported by The Incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow, one of Glasgow’s historic craft incorporations. Its involvement gives the award a strong connection to the host city and to a long tradition of recognising skill, craftsmanship and technical excellence.

In 2026, the winner will be announced during the Congress Dinner at Merchants House of Glasgow, home of the Incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow.

Recognising the next generation

The Hammermen David K. Harrison Student Award is more than a competition. It is a celebration of emerging engineering talent and a recognition of the important role students play in shaping the future of the profession.

By providing students with visibility, feedback and encouragement, the award supports the development of confident, creative and socially aware engineers.

At a time when engineering faces major questions around technology, sustainability, health, infrastructure and society, the work of the finalists offers a positive reminder: the future of engineering is already being imagined, designed and tested by students.

The EPC looks forward to celebrating the 2026 finalists and sharing their work as part of EAN Congress 2026.
