Spotlight on complex systems: Managing floods in urban infrastructure

Our Complex Systems Toolkit teaching resource case study “Managing floods in urban infrastructure” introduces a structured, systems-thinking–based teaching resource. It provides educators with tools and frameworks, such as the Cynefin framework and stakeholder mapping, to analyse and interpret complex socio-technical challenges. It addresses both AHEP mapping and INCOSE competencies.

Dr. Rhythima Shinde, author of the case study, had this to say about her resource, and about the importance of embedding complex systems teaching into teaching: “For me, engineering education must cross boundaries – between disciplines, between people, and between ideas. The Toolkit makes it easier for educators to embed that multi-disciplinarity and prepare students to navigate complex systems in practice. I’m proud to contribute to the Toolkit because it bridges technical skills with the ability to work across disciplines and engage with complexity. That’s what real-world engineering is about.”

We’ve provided this and other practical Teaching resourcesKnowledge articles and Guidance articles for you to use and adapt, and to make it simple for you to embed complex systems concepts into your teaching.
