Datasets and analysis

results picData and analysis is key to the work of the EPC. As part of our work to continually improve your membership provision, we are currently reviewing the data available on the website to make sure you get what you really need in a useful and timely format. To facilitate this, the HESA datasets on this page are currently being modified to enable better access to data in future. If you are looking for some specific data, are wondering if there are any more updates available, or would like to help inform this process, please contact us.

The datasets and analyses provided here are available to members only. A password is required. If your institution is a member and you have forgotten your password, please contact us.

Click on the links in the right hand menu to access the datasets. The descriptions and sources may be found in the drop down boxes below.

Many of the datasets to be found here are provided by the Higher Education Statistics Agency Limited (HESA). HESA does not accept responsibility for any inferences or conclusions derived from the HESA Data by third parties. HESA shall not have any liability (however caused) for any loss of profit, business, contracts, revenues, increased costs or expenses or any indirect or consequential loss arising from the use of its Higher Education Information Database for Institutions (HEIDI) or its unavailability.

Applications

10 year trend of accepted applications to engineering disciplines (compared with national trend for other disciplines). Shown by high level subject group and more detailed engineering discipline.

Degree classification

Downloadable and togglable engineering degree classification data (HESA) for the last six years (2012/13 to 2016/17) in a beta dashboard pending the launch of the new EPC website.

For the most up to date commentary, please see the July 2019 data blog on grade inflation.

Research grants and contracts income by academic cost centre

Research grants and contracts income tells us about the sources of research funding. Engineering research grants and contracts data for 2017/18 can now be downloaded as a research grants and contracts beta dashboard pending the launch of the new EPC website.

For the most up to date commentary, please see the March 2019 EPC briefing on the impact of Brexit on engineering research funding.

Completion

Non-continuation rates for full-time first degree entrants to higher education institutions (HEIs) in England in 2010/11 are provided.  HESA tracks students from the year they enter an institution to the following year (for full-time students) or the following two years (for part-time students) and provides information about where the students are in that year: continuing at the same institution (either on the same course or elsewhere in the institution), transfer to another institution, or absent from higher education completely.  Source: http://www.hesa.ac.uk.

Academic staff numbers

Numbers of academic staff in each of the engineering cost centres profiled by contract type (research, teaching, teaching and research), nationality (UK, other EU, non EU) and professorial status. Expenditure by academic cost centre

Expenditure profiles for each engineering discipline at sector level and for each of the Mission Groups. Also compares the engineering spending profile with total expenditure in academic departments at sector level. Provides a tool to allow benchmarking of an individual institution with up to 5 others. Gender benchmarking – staff and students

If you’re applying for Athena-SWAN recognition, you may be asked to provide a comparison of your institution’s proportion of female staff and students with the national proportion for that discipline.  Here, you can access the statistics for the engineering sub disciplines for both staff and students.

Student numbers and profiling

Student numbers for each of the engineering disciplines together with some profiling (domicile, gender by level of study) are available. Student-staff ratios

SSRs have been calculated from HESA data by totalling the number of students, at all levels of study (PGR, PGT, UG (first degree) and UG (other)) in JACS Code H (H0 to H9) and dividing by the total number of academic staff on either a permanent teaching only or teaching plus research contract in Cost Centres 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21.
